Wrestling Betting Guide

When people hear the word “wrestling,” a lot of different things come to mind. If you are a history buff, you might initially be thinking of the sport whose origins trace back more than 10,000 years. And if you want to be even more exact, wrestling was one of the very first Olympic sports when the event was first ran in Athens, Greece around the same time!

If you are from the United States, you might think of the WWF, now known as the WWE. This is the top professional wrestling organization in the country and the world and one of the mostly widely known for its open wrestling betting opportunities at most major bookies.

Finally, Olympic fans might think of men in leotards grappling on a soft mat in hopes of pinning an opponent down. No matter which of these came to mind, you are correct. Wrestling does come in many forms, and regardless of what form you are talking about, it can be wagered upon.

In the modern era, wrestling is not the most popular sport that exists, but is still quite popular amongst bettors. So regardless if you’re choosing to wager on actual wrestling or “fake” and pre-determined matches on Pay-Per-View, you’ll always find something listed at most major books that we list here at BettingSites.us.

Popular Wrestling Organizations

WWE

WWE stands for World Wrestling Entertainment and is a US-based organization that has been around since the 1950s in some form or another. Despite its changing names, the general premise has remained the same throughout the years. When it comes down to it, WWE events are not wrestling as much as they are kayfabe.

For those who are unaware — and there are many — kayfabe is essentially the portrayal of acted, fake, synthetic scenarios as being real. In essence, every aspect of WWE is fake. Though there is definitely some real hard-hitting going on in most events, the fact of the matter is that outcomes are scripted more often than they are not. The extent of kayfabe that the WWE exudes even goes as far as to fabricate rivalries and relationships. WWE is not as much wrestling as it is a big act.

Having said that much, you might think that people are crazy to wager on any WWE event. While that might be true, the fact of the matter is that the WWE is perhaps the most popular wrestling organization on the planet, and their events are the best to wager upon. Despite the scripted outcomes, normal individuals like you and I have no idea who is going to win. As such, even though the events are scripted they are not always predictable.

By nature, WWE is a violent sport. As opposed to Greco-Roman wrestling which features grappling and a good bit of structure, WWE is considered to be largely lawless. It is not uncommon to see a wrestler hit an opponent with items such as chairs, bats, and even tables. There are matches held within a caged arena as well as tag-team matches that really mix things up. WWE may not be strictly real, but it is one of the most exciting, if not the absolute most exciting, wrestling on the planet.

World Wrestling Championships/Olympics

The World Wrestling Championships are held annually and Olympic wrestling is a part of the Summer Olympics, which are held every 4 years. This type of wrestling is called Greco-Roman and traces its origins back to Ancient Greece. As opposed to WWE, Greco-Roman is a very real type of wrestling. It features no scripted acts and, most importantly, all of the violence is real.

Greco-Roman wrestling is not held in a boxing ring like WWE, but on a circular mat. Two wrestlers compete for two three-minute periods to determine a winner. A winner is determined by a point system which awards points for takedowns, reversals, and many other moves that are unique to wrestling. Barring a player tapping out, or completely giving up, the match’s winner is determined by whoever has the most points at the end of the two rounds.

For both the Olympics and the annual World Championships, the locations of the events change.

Betting on Wrestling

When it comes to wagering on wrestling, this can be done at almost any time of the year. In some form or another, professional wrestling is happening almost always. Of course, as you might expect, WWE wagering is available more often than any other type. WWE events are held on every Monday of almost every week throughout the year. Beyond that, there are special events that are held frequently.

When it comes to actually placing a wager on WWE events, you are most often placing wagers on who will win a particular match. Unlike Greco-Roman style wrestling, there is no set point system or way to score WWE events. As such, you are subjected to the randomness that is the judging of WWE events. Apart from the outcomes of the matches as far as winners and losers are concerned, you can also wager on propositions (aka “props”).

When we say “propositions,” we are really talking about a blanket term that covers so much. Because of all the drama that comes with just about every WWE event, you are able to place wagers on things such as who will make a surprise appearance, whether a wrestler says a specific phrase, how many times a performer will say a catch phrase, and so on and so forth. The number of proposition bets that will be available will really depend upon how high-profile the given event is.

As for betting on Greco-Roman style wrestling such as that which will take place at the annual World Championships and every Summer Olympics, these types of wagers will resemble traditional sports betting. Thanks to the numbered scoring system, you will see point spreads, over/unders, and even moneyline wagers. To be fair, Greco-Roman style wrestling is technically composed of amateurs.

Because of this, learning more about who is competing can often be difficult. For this reason, being fully knowledgeable with regard to what you are wagering on is not always easy. Luckily, you are also able to place wagers on the teams and how you think they will perform overall. So while you may not know how great a certain wrestler is, you might know that the country they come from is the best in the world. With all of this being said, Greco-Roman wrestling is assuredly gaining popularity. With this comes a plethora of online resources through which you can find out just about everything you need to know to make the most informed betting decisions.

As for where you can find wagering options on all styles of wrestling, these exist on just about every and any reputable sportsbook. As for when the most wrestling wagering exists, that is something that happens every four years when the Summer Olympics takes place. There are in upwards of 100 wrestling matches at the Olympics which provides for endless entertainment as well as endless betting opportunities.
